Check AvailabilityWe turned a 120-year-old machiya townhouse in the historic castle town of Gujo Hachiman into a place for one group at a time.
It sits quietly in the old streetscape along the river.
Not grand — just the pace of life that exists here.

The entire house is reserved for your group alone. No shared lobbies, no other guests. For the duration of your stay, this home is yours.

Built in the early Showa era, this townhouse has been carefully renovated while preserving its original structure. Heavy timber beams and hand-plastered walls speak to another era.

Sit on the engawa wooden veranda and the Yoshida River flows right below you. The sound of the water is something you carry home.

The open kitchen is stocked with cookware, utensils, and tableware. Pick up ingredients at the supermarket 5 minutes away and cook together.

Gujo Hachiman is a small castle town nestled in the mountains of Gifu Prefecture, about 90 minutes from Nagoya by highway bus. Spring-water channels flow through the streets and the Yoshida River cuts through the center of town.
In summer, the town hosts Gujo Odori — one of Japan's three great Bon dances, running from mid-July to early September. At its peak, people dance all night for four consecutive days. The town transforms: lanterns, drums, and dancing in the streets until dawn.
Outside summer, Gujo Hachiman is quiet. Autumn brings maple and ginkgo color along the river. Winter brings snow and near-silence. The rest of the year belongs to anyone willing to walk slowly.
The house is a 15-minute walk from the highway bus stop, or we can arrange a pickup from the station.
Guests who book through this website receive the following benefits.
Standard check-out is 11:00. Direct bookings may check out at 12:00 at no extra charge.
A hand-written guide to Gujo Hachiman's restaurants, with places only locals know. One copy per stay.
From your second stay onward, one breakfast (worth ¥2,200) is on us as a thank-you.
Also available on Airbnb and Rakuten Travel.
The easiest option is the highway bus from Meitetsu Bus Center in Nagoya — about 90 minutes direct to the Gujo Hachiman stop. By car, take the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway and exit at Gujo Hachiman IC, about 10 minutes from the house. We can arrange a pickup from the bus stop or station — just let us know your arrival time.
Free cancellation up to 7 days before check-in. 50% charge for cancellations 6–3 days before. Full charge within 2 days of arrival.
Families with children are very welcome. Please be aware that as a traditional old building, there are raised thresholds and steep stairs. No baby cots are available, but futons can be laid side by side. Let us know in advance and we'll do our best to prepare.
Yes — a cast-iron wood-burning stove in the main room. Firewood is provided. The owner will walk you through how to use it at check-in. It heats the whole downstairs and is particularly wonderful in autumn and winter.
Very much so. Gujo Odori runs from mid-July through early September and is one of Japan's three great Bon dances. Anyone can join the dance circle — no experience needed. The Bon Odori around August 13–16 involves all-night dancing and is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Book well in advance as rooms fill up months ahead.
The owner (Naito) speaks basic English and will do his best to assist. For more detailed communication we recommend translating key information in advance, or using a translation app. The house manual is provided in both Japanese and English.
